Home Repair Program

Keeping Long Island Homeowners Safe and Healthy in Their Homes

NEIGHBORHOOD REVITALIZATION & HOME REPAIR PROGRAM

The goal of neighborhood revitalization is to improve the quality of life for all Long Island residents. The greatest change happens in a neighborhood when people work together ― residents, community associations and partners.

Habitat for Humanity of Long Islands’ contributions to Improved Quality of Life has been proven for over two decades, engaging residents and working in collaboration with partners, bringing people together to build decent affordable homes in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

The Need
The need for Habitat’s work is immense: older Americans are one of the fastest-growing demographics in the country ― by 2030, 20% of the U.S. population will be 65 or older. Yet, more than 19 million older adults are living in homes that are in disrepair or ill-equipped to safely meet their needs.

Our Impact
Safe and accessible housing is a key social determinant of health. As leaders in housing, Habitat Long Island joins the vast network of Habitat affiliates across the United States, in offering an evidence-based approach, Habitat’s Aging in Place program that advances both housing and health equity for older Americans.

Many hardworking families, seniors and veterans on Long Island own a home but are unable to maintain it because of the ever-increasing cost of repairs and maintenance. Habitat Long Islands’ Home Repair program is a construction-based resource aimed at identifying and addressing health and safety-related repairs to the home. The goal of this program is to provide owner-occupied homes with a safe, healthy, and accessible environment. The Home Repair program will not be used for emergency repair purposes.

Habitat of Long Islands’ A Brush With Kindness program is an exterior home repair and preservation program that offers painting, landscaping, weather stripping, ramps, and minor repair services for low-income senior, disabled and other homeowners in need. The program promotes safe and well-maintained homes along with pride and dignity. Improvements to the appearance of the neighborhood also encourage a stronger community.

How does the program work?
Through an application process, qualified homeowners partner with Habitat Long Island to make affordable exterior and interior repairs on their homes. The cost of the repairs is subsidized based on the homeowner’s household income.
